What are the different jobs in tech and where do I find them?

Different jobs for different skills
There are many different jobs within the tech industry, and each one offers its own unique set of challenges and rewards. Here are just a few examples of the types of jobs you can find in tech, along with some reasons why a career in tech might be a good choice:
Tech sales: Tech sales professionals are responsible for selling technology products or services to customers. This can be a fast-paced and rewarding career, as you'll have the opportunity to work with the latest and greatest technology and help customers solve problems.
Pre-sales: Pre-sales professionals work with potential customers to understand their needs and help design solutions using the company's products or services. This role often involves working closely with the sales team to develop and present proposals to customers.
Software engineer: Software engineers design, develop, and test software applications. This can be a challenging and rewarding career, as you'll have the opportunity to work on complex problems and create solutions that make a difference.
Data scientist: Data scientists use advanced analytical and statistical techniques to extract insights and knowledge from large datasets. This is a fast-growing field, with many organisations looking for professionals who can help them make data-driven decisions.
Product manager: Product managers are responsible for defining and driving the development of a product. This can be a highly strategic role, as you'll need to understand the needs of your customers and the market in order to create successful products.
DevOps engineer: DevOps engineers work to improve the collaboration and communication between development and operations teams. This can be a challenging role, as you'll need to balance the needs of both groups in order to deliver high-quality software quickly and efficiently.
Technical writer: Technical writers create technical documentation, such as user manuals and online help guides. This can be a rewarding career for those who enjoy writing and have an interest in technology.
The bonus role! - The non-tech, tech role
There are many other roles in the tech industry that aren't technical or that can provide a pathway to more technical roles. You can work in a non-tech function for a tech company which might help forge your path. These roles include program management, marketing, social media, event coordination and many more. Some of these might suit your skills and be a better place to get started!

My Journey
My career journey has been an ever-evolving one, filled with a mix of challenges, learnings, and growth. I began my professional journey as a cold caller in the Demand Generation and Lead Generation field, with limited experience and a lot to learn. But I was eager to learn and make an impact.
As I gained more experience, I moved on to Inside Sales, where I honed my communication and negotiation skills. I then transitioned to Field Sales, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the sales process and interact with customers directly. This role also allowed me to develop my skills in managing and mentoring a team of sales representatives, which led to my next step as a Sales Manager.
However, I soon realized that I missed the hands-on aspect of selling and the direct customer interactions. I decided to move back to field sales, where I could apply my management skills in a more direct way, while also staying close to the pulse of the market. This experience taught me the importance of being adaptable and open-minded when it comes to career choices.
Eventually, I landed in my current role as a Technical Business Development professional, where I am able to combine my technical knowledge, sales experience, and strategic thinking to drive growth for my organisation.
Throughout my journey, my focus has always been on continuous learning (I will write about this in 2023). I always strive to push myself out of my comfort zone, which has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. I believe that trying new roles and stepping out of one's comfort zone is an excellent way to discover one's strengths and interests, and that is something that I will definitely continue to explore in the future.
Where to find the job you are looking for
Here are some resources where you can find jobs in the tech industry:
LinkedIn: I am sure you all know this one! A professional networking site that also has a job search feature. You can use the site to search for tech jobs, connect with recruiters, and apply to positions.
Tech job boards: There are many websites that specialise in tech jobs, such as Dice, TechCareers, and Hired. These sites allow you to search for jobs by location, job type, and company.
Company websites: Many tech companies have career sections on their websites where they post job openings. You can visit the websites of companies you are interested in working for and see if they have any open positions that match your skills and experience. For example: www.amazon.jobs
Recruitment agencies: Recruitment agencies, also known as headhunters or staffing agencies, can help you find a job in the tech industry. They work with companies to fill open positions and often have access to job opportunities that are not advertised elsewhere.
Professional associations: Professional associations in the tech industry, such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) or the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), often have job boards or career resources for members.
Your professional network: Another place to find a job (and one of the most effective ones!) is your existing professional network. Keep building your relationships and stay in touch with people you come across in your career. I will write a post on professional networking later in the year, keep an eye out for this!
Friends and Family: The final place would be to speak to friends and family, you never know who has contacts in the industry that can help with a referral.
By using a combination of these resources, you can increase your chances of finding a rewarding tech job that matches your skills and interests.
