Tech Career Insider - Introduction

Why consider a career in tech?

Introduction

Hello! Welcome to the newsletter for aspiring tech professionals for people who want to make a career in technology, or further your career if you're already in the industry. I am the main author; Erik Orrgarde and I have 16 years of experience in tech sales. I am a business development manager for a technology company, there's a clue on who in the picture below...(find me on LinkedIn) and I want to help aspiring tech professionals achieve their goals of breaking into a career in tech or furthering your career. To start, this will be a monthly newsletter and we will see how we progress. Please feel free to give me feedback on what you would like to see or hear as we go.

A bit about me

I don’t have a degree.

My first job was a job I found in a newspaper advert. I was someone with no previous experience or skills and now had the daunting task of cold calling, making 100+ dials a day and marking leads down manually on a sheet of paper. I still use some of the skills I learned in that job today.

Over the years I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work for some great organisations and some great leaders, some have had degrees, some haven’t. What’s the point here? The point is, education isn’t everything. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, finding decent mentors, going above and beyond your scope, learning new things is just as important. Some of the best people I’ve worked with in 16 years haven’t had degrees either.

These are some of the experiences I want to share through this newsletter.

Why this newsletter?

I know firsthand how difficult it can be to break into the tech industry, but I also know that with the right mindset and resources, anyone can succeed. That's why I'm excited to share my insights and experience through this newsletter. I hope that my stories and advice can help you on your journey to a fulfilling career in tech. So, let's get started!

Why consider a career in tech?

Tech sales jobs in the cloud market can be incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally. Here are just a few reasons why working in tech, and specifically in tech sales, can be a great career move:

1. High demand: The tech industry is growing at an incredible rate, and there is a high demand for skilled professionals in tech sales. This means that there are plenty of job opportunities available, and the potential for career advancement is strong.

2. Competitive salaries: Tech sales jobs often come with competitive salaries, especially in the cloud market. As the demand for cloud services continues to grow, companies are willing to pay top dollar for talented sales professionals who can help them drive revenue and gain market share.

3. Opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology: One of the most exciting aspects of working in tech is the opportunity to work with the latest and greatest technology. In a tech sales role, you'll have the chance to learn about and sell innovative products and services that are shaping the future of the industry.

4. Potential for career growth: A career in tech sales can be a stepping stone to other leadership roles within a company. Many tech sales professionals go on to become sales managers, product managers, or even executives.

5. Positive work culture: Tech companies are known for having a positive and collaborative work culture. Employees are encouraged to be innovative and take risks, and there is often a strong emphasis on work-life balance.

Overall, working in tech, and specifically in tech sales, can be a fulfilling and rewarding career choice.
